interview

When did you start trail running?

In summer 2012.

What did you do before you started trail running?

I played competitive table tennis.

How long have you been on the Vibram team?

For a few weeks.

What was your favorite race?

The Mini Giir di Mont in 2014, a wonderful route with lots of changes in rhythm and with many, many people along the route to encourage the runners. It was my most emotional race, partly because I won and set the route record.

Your sporting aims for the 2015 season?

To participate in new races and better last year’s times. My main aim is to enjoy running through the mountain peaks and valleys.

Of the races scheduled for 2015, which one motivates you the most?

It’s between the "long" Giir di Mont and the Sierre Zinal Junior.

To choose just one word to define your 2015 races.

VIBRAM MAREMONTANA: Challenge. VIBRAM TRINCEA TRAIL: Have fun.

What are your strong points?

Steep ascents, runnable ascents and descents.

And your weak points?

Steep descents.

What do you think about doing an "Ultra"?

I haven’t taken part in one yet but I’m sure that it’s a great personal challenge and finishing one must be a unique experience.

Any unfulfilled aspirations?

With a little exaggeration: UTMB record, winning the Skyrunning World Series and winning the ski-mountaineering world championships.

What's your favorite dish?

Pizza carbonara (margherita + egg and pancetta).

The most beautiful part of the world?

The Alps in general, especially High Engadin.

Your favorite trail shoe model? Why?

So far I've only tried Dynafit Feline, but I think TNF Ultra MT as they're light and extremely flexible.

What does "Vibram" mean to you?

Grip and security. Grip for ascents and security for descents.

interview

When did you start trail running?

2013.

What were you doing before trail running?

Missing out!... Long distance triathlon, Ironman and long distance world championships, ultra distance cycling events. Ski mountaineering.

Your best race or moment in 2014?

TDS – Early evening, cruising along the ridge toward Mont Joly with the silver Lac de la Girotte to the side, and arriving into Chamonix in a strong position greeted by friends and family.

Your 2015 objectives?

Top 0.5% placing in all 6 main events with team Vibram. Build towards towards solid performances in the 100 mile classics in 2016. To further discover my potential and love for trail running with Team Vibram.

The two races you are particularly motivated for?

My hometown CCC – Chamonix, France. August (101km 6100m+). The adventure of Trail Bourbon – Ile de la Reunion. October (90km 5655m+).

One word to define your 2015 races.

VIBRAM MAREMONTANA: Hammer down.....a fast and furious start to the season! RESTONICA: What better way to see a beautiful island – hot, rocky and some serious elevation. UTMB O CCC: (CCC) Hometown race – friends and family – I know the course like the back of my hand... BOURBON: One hell of an adventure! (and sharks)?

Your stronger quality?

Self assessment – my greatest strength lies in a solid knowledge of my weaknesses. Pain management - I have a worrying ability to suffer! Race day pacing and general endurance.

One weak point?

Chocolate Croissants... come on, I live in France!

During an Ultra-Trail, what do you have mainly in mind?

I like to stay in the 'now' ....so its usually not much beyond my race plan. Its always very meditative for me, taking in the environment with all my senses. My mind is quiet, calm and peaceful.. which (apparently) makes a nice change from my normal hyperactivity!

A dream?

One day to stand on the UTMB Podium.

Your favorite meal?

Pre race-day Indian curry.

The best place on earth?

Ask me at the end of the season! Teteaux Vents trail or the Signal Forbes and the grand balcon Nord at home in Chamonix. From humble beginnings, the rolling hills of the Purbecks and New Forest – Southcoast UK. The Nepalese Himalaya and Peruvian Cordilla Blanca are places I'm also very fond of.

Your best trail running shoe model? Why?

Dynafit Feline Ghost and Dynafit Feline Superlight. A very positive shoe, responsive with fantastic grip in all weather conditions.

What does "Vibram" mean for you?

I am very proud to further my career with this elite team to develop and learn and redefine my own limits. The equipment is truly outstanding, Vibram is a mark of quality with durability and stability unrivaled by other brands. From snow and ice to deep mud, smooth rocks and sand; wherever adventure and competition take me and in all extremes of weather, I can always trust the superior grip of Vibram.

Spanish, specifically Basque, from Vitoria Gasteiz, born in 1974. He works as a researcher at a Technological Centre specialised in technologies for industrial production. He defines himself as an athlete who loves taking every chance to put on a pair of running shoes. “It does not matter if I am alone or with others, if I run or walk, if it is raining or sunny. I always try to look for the good things in life”.

He started running about 6 years ago, at 30, then he discovered trailrunning and fell in love. In 2010 he attempted the Hiru Haundiak ultra-trail (100 km); he enjoyed it and to his surprise came fifth. From them on, trailrunning has become part of his life. He considers his best race to be the UTMB® 2013, not just because he arrived third, a dream come true, but also for the sensations before, during and after the race. He feels part of the “Ordinary people being extraordinary” philosophy and considers Vibram® soles as a guarantee of reliability in any weather condition.

AIM: "Try to do my best and enjoy every race. With the support of the Trailrunning Team Vibram®, he hopes to achieve excellent results in the UTMB® – perhaps repeating the performance of 2013 – and the Diagonale des Fous, his first ultra race outside Europe.”

CALENDAR: Trail Sainte Victoire, Ultra-Ardechois, Ultra-Trail Verbier, TDS, Diagonale des Fous, Vibram® HK100, ecc...

interview

When did you first start trail running?

I began trail running back in 2008.

How long have you been in Team Vibram?

I’ve been with them since 2012 and I’ve loved every minute.

Best memory from your 2014 Vibram season?

Summer 2014 with the Ultra Corsica and the TDS.

Your favorite race?

My top three since I started running would be Grand Raid Réunion, Marathon des Sables, Transvulcania – Speedgoat.

Your sporting objective for the 2015 season?

2015 is going to be a transitional year and I’ll be running fewer km to recharge my batteries... My two goals will be the Challenge Verbier/OCC and the Ultra Mount Fuji.

Which two 2015 races are you most looking forward to?

It’s tricky, but Madeira and the Mount Fuji race stand out... I’d also like to do Vibram proud at Chamonix.

Your 2015 races in one word.

TRANSGRANCANARIA: heat. UTMB O CCC: camaraderie. ULTRA TRAIL MONT FUJI: 10.

Your strengths?

Determination, physical ability.

Weaknesses?

The psychological aspect and diet.

What do you think about during an "Ultra"?

About the hours of training I've done to try and make it to the end in a decent position and a decent state... LOL. About my family, especially my son...

Your dream?

A legendary 100-mile race in the USA: Western States – Hardrock – Leadville.

Your favorite meal?

Before, I would have said raclette (a Swiss dish made with melted cheese), but now I'd go more for a big sweet and savory salad with cheese and melon.

The most beautiful place on earth?

There are so many... but for running, getting away from it all on the crest of a mountain is just priceless, summer or winter.

Favorite trail shoe?

At the moment I use Hokas a lot - In 2015 I think I'll alternate between Hoka and TNF, depending on the type of race.

What does "Vibram" mean to you?

Extra grip and efficacy whether climbing or descending... INDISPENSABLE for me when out roaming and faced with challenging natural terrain...

Italian. Born in 1982, in Busto Arsizio, he was the new entry of the Trailrunning Team Vibram® 2013.Engaged to Eleonora, also a fan of trailrunning, who he met at the end of a race, Stefano has a sporting background: 10 years of football followed by road cycling, marathons and mountain biking until 2005, when, almost by chance, his passion for trailrunning exploded: “Right now trailrunning is a fundamental part of my life, if not the core of it. It has become a lifestyle, an absolute necessity for me to feel good”.

I met the Trailrunning Team Vibram® at the Lavaredo Ultra Trail 2012. Stefano competed in the race and got to know the guys of the Trailrunning Team Vibram®, instantly feeling good about them. Stefano completely adheres to the team's philosophy: he works as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross, he trains in his free time and firmly believes in the material and psychological support he can gain from belonging to a team, especially when tackling long distance races, where assistance along the route is essential, both from a technical and humanistic point of view.

He says: “Running with (and for) the Trailrunning Team Vibram® has given me a lot: sharing adventures, both good and bad, with splendid people, makes me grow as an athlete and a person…Ordinary people being extraordinary, nothing could be truer!”

AIM: "“…in 2014 I will completely focus on international races, to be able to confirm my performance in Trans d’Havet. The chief aims will be the World Series and the ISF world cup. And for the “grand finale”, the legendary Diagonale des Fous, where I will try to take home a 100 miles! Finally!…”.

interview

When did you start trail running?

I entered my first race in 2010. Then, more seriously, from 2011.

What did you do before you started trail running?

I used to play football and started road running in 2005.

How long have you been on the Vibram team?

Since 2013.

Your best memory of the Vibram 2014 season?

The week in La Réunion, which culminated with a team win at the Diagonale de Fous.

What was your favorite race?

I've taken part in many great races but coming in 7th in the Diagonale de Fous was the best achievement in my career. So far.

Your sporting aims for the 2015 season?

To do well in the Ultra Trail World Tour and take part in the Annecy World Championship.

Of the races scheduled for 2015, which one motivates you the most?

Without a doubt, the UTMB. I have a score to settle.

If you had to choose just one word to define your 2015 races.

VIBRAM MAREMONTANA: Classic. UTMB O CCC: Legendary. DIAGONALE DES FOUS: Unique.

What are your strong points?

Continuity and resistance. And the longest descents at the end of the races.

And your weak points?

Quick starts.

What do you think about during an "Ultra"?

In moments of crisis I ask myself "what am I doing here?". Best not to think.

Any unfulfilled aspirations?

Many... But for this year, to achieve a good placement at the UTMB.

What's your favorite dish?

Pizza.

The most beautiful part of the world?

Many places. If I close my eyes, I think of Valmasino, the Canary Islands, the desert and Mont Blanc.

Your favorite trail shoe model? Why?

Dynafit Feline. I like the elongated shape that leaves the ankle free to move and allows sensitivity during descents.

What does "Vibram" mean to you?

To me, Vibram soles mean resistance and security. But Vibram is so much more. Familiarity and professionalism. Support.

bio

Italian. Born in 1987 in Desenzano del Garda. Third season with the Trailrunning Team Vibram®. Nicola fell in love with the outdoors while working in a sport equipment store, which he left after three years to focus on his passion full time. His top adventures include a long bike trip in Argentina: riding the 6,000 km of the RN40, from La Quiaca to Ushuaia.

In 2012 he ran the UTMB®, Lavaredo Ultra Trail and Les Templiers with Team Vibram, which remains his best memory: “I fondly remember the time spent with the team in Millau at the Festival des Templiers: the ensuing friendly atmosphere, the light heartedness and the fact of sharing not just the passion for racing but also day to day things.”

For Nicola trailrunning is first of all a personal race, a way to test his body and his mind while improving and getting to know himself to the full. In 2013 he represented the Trailrunning Team Vibram® in Europe, Asia and America! He crossed the finish line in 9th place overall in the Vibram® Hong Kong 100, in 3rd place in the Ultra-trail Corsica.

AIM: "I am expecting to improve greatly! Supported by my friend and team mate “Guru” Ruzza… who very patiently is helping me to finish my training with his precious tips! I cannot wait to be at the Ronda dels Cims and the mythical Tor des Geants”.

CALENDAR: La Grande Corsa Bianca, Rovaniemi150, Trail Sainte Victoire, Vibram® Maremontana, Vibram® Trincea Trail, Ronda dels Cims Andorra, Trail degli Eroi, Tor des Gèants, etc

interview

Nicola, What is your job?

Right now I don’t have one. I’d like to find a position in the trail sector.

Do you have children? A family?

No !

Can you give us a couple of words which best characterise the type of athlete you are?

Stubborn, obstinate.

When and why did you start doing trailrunning, and particularly ultra-trail?

Initially I did climbing and mountaineering. I started to run to increase my breathing capacity. Then when I started to work in an outdoor material store I had to stop climbing due to my hours. So it was natural to fall back on long races in the mountains.

What is your best race memory? And your biggest disappointment?

My best memories would have to be the Adamello Supertrail 2011 and the Argentina Crosscountry (north-south) by bike... Disappointments? UTMB® 2013 and Diagonale des Fous 2013: two races which remain memorable experiences.

Is this your first, second or third season with Trailrunning Team Vibram®?

This will be the third...the best!!! I hope!

Tell us a bit about this experience and the Team’s spirit?

There is certainly a strong sense of friendship and Team spirit which goes way beyond just the team linked to Trail...I have made great friends and am sure these friendships will continue over time.

Running with Vibram soles: what are the advantages?

The excellent grip, especially in the most critical conditions which means better safety.

What are your expectations for the 2014 Season? What will be the highlights?

I expect to see a great improvement! Helped by my friend and teammate “Guru” Ruzza ...who has been helping me very patiently to complete my training as best as possible with great tips!
